Grants

Baxter funds initiatives that increase global access to healthcare. In 2006, The Baxter International Foundation awarded grants totaling more than $4.2 million to nearly 70 organizations in 22 countries. Grants awarded in 2006 will help promote health education to children, provide mental health services to low-income youth, increase clinical services for women who are homeless or experience domestic violence, and improve access to healthcare for children, the uninsured and the elderly.

For example, through a $260,000, two-year grant, the foundation partnered with Charities Aid Foundation in New Delhi, India, to establish an initiative to increase awareness of and access to treatment options for conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity and other chronic conditions among high-risk populations.

Additionally, The Baxter International Foundation approved a $190,000, two-year grant to AmeriCares to establish a warehouse in India that will enhance disaster response in Asia and Africa. Currently, most donated healthcare products are shipped from AmeriCares warehouses in the United States and the Netherlands. The new warehouse will enable AmeriCares to respond to communities in the region more quickly and cost-effectively, potentially saving thousands more lives.

In the United States, Baxter established the Baxter International Foundation Health Recovery Fund in 2006 with a $750,000 grant to the Foundation for the Mid South (FMS), a regional development foundation serving Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. The donor-advised Fund provides incremental grants to support community-based health care clinics, nonprofits, and other community-based health services for restoration efforts after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. In July, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation underscored the importance of the fund by providing a matching grant of $500,000 to the Fund's granting pool, contributing to the nearly $1.1 million in total grant dollars that the FMS awarded to 18 organizations in 2006.
